MARCH

The cold, wet conditions were certainly not conducive to butterfly activity although a few were found at the end of March.

A Small Tortoiseshell fluttered out from a house in Alnwick (17th) and “1 Peacock (was spotted) flying at Branton Ponds (nr. Powburn/22nd). Another cluster of 3 was encountered in a sheltered stretch of the Carey Burn (Cheviot Hills nr. Wooler) on the 31st.

These pages do, of course, refer to a month which is early in the year and yet there were signs of a little butterfly activity.
